As someone who lives in two languages (and two pizza ovens), I get asked a lot: “Is it better to translate from English to Japanese, or from Japanese to English?”
The truth? It depends. And like pizza dough, the direction you start makes a big difference in the final result.

English
Writing for Japanese readers? Start in English, translate to Japanese. Writing for English readers? Start in Japanese, translate to English. Seems obvious, but many people forget their readers aren’t living in their head.

日本人向けに書くなら、まず英語で書いてから日本語に訳す。 英語圏の人向けなら、日本語で書いてから英語に訳す。 当たり前のように見えるけど、意外とみんな「読者の頭の中にはいない」ことを忘れがちです。

English is direct. Japanese is nuanced.
Example:
Bad Japanese (too literal): “This pizza is out of this world.” → 「このピザはこの世界の外です。」 (Sounds like we launched it into space 🚀) Good Japanese (localized): “This pizza is out of this world.” → 「このピザ、宇宙級にうまい！」 (Now it sounds natural, fun, and tasty.)

English
If you’re funnier, sharper, and more natural in English (like me), always start in English. Then, adapt into Japanese with the same playful flavor.
Bad translation example (robotic):
“Come grab a slice, it’s Saturday.” → 「来て、一切れをつかんでください。今日は土曜日です。」
(Polite, but sounds like Siri is inviting you to pizza.)
Good translation example (local tone):
“Come grab a slice, it’s Saturday.” → 「土曜だし、一枚どう？」
(Natural, casual, and friendly.)
日本語
もし自分が英語の方がユーモアも自然さも出せるなら、英語で書くのがベスト。
その後、日本語に遊び心を持ってアレンジ。
悪い翻訳（ロボットっぽい）
「Come grab a slice, it’s Saturday.」→「来て、一切れをつかんでください。今日は土曜日です。」
（丁寧だけど、Siriにピザ誘われてる気分。）
良い翻訳（ローカル感あり）
「Come grab a slice, it’s Saturday.」→「土曜だし、一枚どう？」
（自然でカジュアル、友達っぽい。）
